About the Town of Hollis, NH
Hollis, New Hampshire is located in Hillsborough County. Its history dates back to the late 17th century when it was settled by European colonizers. The town was officially incorporated in 1746 and was named after the English diplomat, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who was a supporter of the American colonies during the Revolutionary War.
During its early years, Hollis was primarily an agricultural community, with farms and orchards dotting the landscape. The town played a significant role in the growth of New Hampshire’s apple industry, as apple trees thrived in the region’s fertile soil and temperate climate. The town also had several mills and sawmills that contributed to its economic development.
In the late 19th century, Hollis experienced a decline in agriculture and industrial activities. Many residents migrated to urban areas in search of better job opportunities. However, the town experienced a resurgence in the mid-20th century when people began moving to Hollis for its scenic beauty and rural charm, making it a desirable residential area.
Today, Hollis has a population of approximately 7,800 residents. The town is characterized by its large, picturesque homes, expansive landscapes, and a strong sense of community. The town’s government operates under a town meeting form of governance, where residents gather to vote on town policies and make decisions collectively.
Hollis is home to an excellent public school system, which consists of two elementary schools, Hollis Primary School and Hollis Upper Elementary School, serving students from kindergarten to sixth grade. The schools are known for their dedicated teachers, rigorous academic programs, and emphasis on community involvement. The middle and high school students in Hollis attend the neighboring town’s schools, including Hollis Brookline Middle School and Hollis Brookline High School.
